Skateboarding is a $5 billion global industry. This includes not just the skateboards themselves, although they play a major role, but also skateboard apparel, skateparks, and various other entertainment aspects that contribute to the popularity and success of the sport and lifestyle. Perhaps what skateboarding is best known for, however, is annoying older neighbors. Throughout pop culture, skateboarding often symbolizes childish revolt and undermining of authoritative figures. Sure, that’s the case with some skateboarders, but not all. Janne Saario, a Finnish skateboarder who began riding at age six, is one of the “good ones” who skated for the love of the sport and not just as an expression of rebellion. Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to separate the two. “We would scour the city to find locations that had a certain atmosphere,” said Saario. Kids all over get creative when it comes to their skateboarding hobbies. If they can’t skate in certain areas, they build their own places to skate. “Skateboarding made me into an architecture nerd,” Saario added. It’s one thing for local skateparks to be designed for children, but Saario states that young adults need the freedom to skate in unsupervised areas. “Teens need a place to figure themselves out,” he adds. Despite what many adults believe, skateparks are actually great for kids to stay out of trouble. Sure, there might be the everyday mischief taking place, but that kind of thing would happen just about anywhere, and isn’t too serious. According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, 102 police officers in 37 states were asked about the skateparks in their respective areas. Most of those officers actually admitted that the overall juvenile crime rates in those areas with skateparks actually decreased. Skateboarding, contrary to curmudgeonly opinion, is not a gateway crime. It’s a perfectly acceptable, fun, and productive way for young adults to spend their time. Although this industry is doing so well, only 3.1% of all skateboard sales happen inside physical sporting goods stores.
